He would be far too modest to say so himself, but Cliff Jones was the most thrilling, eye-catching individualist in the glorious Tottenham Hotspur side which, in 1960/61, became the first in the twentieth century to lift the elusive League and FA Cup double.
The sublimely talented likes of Danny Blanchflower and Dave Mackay, John White and Bobby Smith, were all colossally influential members of Bill Nicholson’s sumptuously gifted team, but it was the wiry little Welsh winger, endowed with the speed of a cheetah and the heart of a lion, who transfixed the fans with avid expectation whenever the ball landed at his twinkling feet.
At his peak Jones, who shone for his country alongside iconic star John Charles as Wales defied the odds to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Sweden in 1958, was among the most sought-after footballers on the planet. Indeed, he would have been the costliest of them all if Spurs had accepted a £125,000 bid for his services from Juventus in 1963, the year in which he excelled as the north Londoners secured Britain’s first major European trophy.
He was one of the game’s exhilarating rarities, a high-velocity sprinter endowed with magnetic ball control, and he was brilliant in the air, many of his numerous goals coming from perilous aerial duels with towering defenders.
Between these covers, Cliff Jones tells his riveting story, from his early days with Swansea Town, through the Glory Glory Days at White Hart Lane and beyond.
Fearlessly, too, he reveals how he fought alcoholism after his retirement as a player, rising courageously above that destructive affliction, and finishes with a heart-warming personal account of Wales’ enthralling exploits at Euro 2016.
Cliff can declare with conviction: It's A Wonderful Life!
